The History of Dreher Family Suffolks

Dreher Family Suffolks has been in business for over twenty-five years.  Our humble beginning started with just twelve head of Suffolk sheep as a 4-H project for the family.  Since that time, we have built a quality flock of sound productive Suffolk sheep, producing nationally competitive individuals.  DFS strives to breed sheep that not only do well in the show ring but also are confirmationally sound sheep that will thrive in any range condition.

The first major addition to our small flock was the purchase of ten ewes from Roger Nichols and two rams including the 3000 ram and a Pipeline bred buck.  This group of sheep added a lot of size and dimension to our flock.  The next milestone for DFS was the use of a pair of Heupel-Luxford bred rams.  Starting in 1994 and continuing to 2001 pure bred Luxford rams were used along with the best buck lambs each year to strengthen our ewe foundation.  Luxford bucks purchased during this time included 751, 830, 872, 902, 1015, 1105, and 1081.

DFS was started in North Dakota and found itself moving to Montana in 2001.  In the summer of 2002, Broken Dollar Ranch bought Silver Legacy from the Paasch family.  The use of this ram along with DFS 72 buck produced excellent females that were sold nationally and maintained in the flock.  Several sons were used out of Silver and 72 for the next few years.   Again in 2008 a 1230 Luxford ram was used.

The history of DFS has come a long way and is proud to be producing quality sheep.  We are very excited about the yearling rams and ewes coming to the shows this summer.  And our lambs look equally impressive.  Thank you to all who have helped us along the way!

We have a great set of yearlings and lambs at the farm.  Contact us for any of your stud ram or ewe needs.
